Luke and Megan met on their first day of law school in 2009.
When the class discussion got a little too serious, Luke cracked a joke.
The only person to not look completely appalled that someone was having fun was Megan. That was the start of a long friendship which lasted throughout law school, the bar exam, and beyond.
Luke and Megan finally got married in 2016 to the surprise of absolutely no one who had known them in law school. Their professional careers grew after marriage as they built the life they dreamed of for themselves.
While picking out his suit for court one morning in 2017, Luke got the life-changing news that he was going to be a dad!
Their first “junior associate” was born in November of 2017. Needless to say, life took a crazy and wonderful turn for the better. Megan spent time focusing on their new addition while Luke continued to provide for their family.
In the summer of 2018, another dream was born. Megan was ready to enter back into the workforce she loved dearly and Luke was longing to combine his two passions; his work and his family. Shipley & Swain, PLLC: a small family-owned, family-focused practice was established, merging their knowledge and experience to provide the best care to their clients on the very foundation that their relationship was built on. The saying is true, they're better together!
Over the years, the Shipley + Swain family has grown; adding another "junior associate" to the team. Luke and Megan still proudly serve their clients each day with the promise of keeping what matters most to you their top priority.
Luke was born in rural Northeast Tennessee, where he learned that hard work is good for the soul, the importance of a job well done, and to never back down from a fight. Those lessons have been his guiding principles throughout his life and his professional career.

Luke graduated summa cum laude from the University of Tennessee in 2009 with a degree in political science and legal studies. Luke continued his education at the University of Tennessee College of Law. While in law school, he clerked for Judge Bill Swann, former Knox County Fourth Circuit Court Judge, where he assisted in the disposition of over 3,000 cases. He also earned top honors in both the Domestic Violence Clinic and the National Trial Team.
He graduated law school in 2012 and immediately began working as an associate attorney at the Held Law Firm, where he handled divorce, custody, child support, adoption, domestic violence, and estate planning cases. During this time, he was also appointed by Judges Bill Swann and Greg McMillan to hear order of protection cases as the youngest Special Master in Tennessee history. Most recently, Luke served as the senior associate attorney the law offices of LaFevor & Slaughter, where he managed a high-volume family law, mediation, and estate planning caseload.
When he isn’t fighting for his clients, playing with the kids, or spending time with Megan, Luke enjoys watching UT football, a good cigar, and handgun marksmanship (Luke is the only legally blind person most folks know who qualified for a concealed carry permit).

Megan graduated summa cum laude in 2009 with a degree in secondary education and history. Megan decided to continue her education at the University of Tennessee College of Law the same year, where she met Luke.
Megan took an unconventional path through law school. In January 2011, Megan went to Arusha, Tanzania for a six-month internship with the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, where she worked in the Appeals and Legal Advisory division for the Office of the Prosecutor. Upon completion of her internship, she was asked to stay for the rest of 2011 to continue her work.
Upon her return in January 2012, she clerked for Judge Bill Swann, former Knox County Fourth Circuit Court Judge. She graduated magna cum laude in December of 2012, and began working for local attorney Robert L. Jolley, Jr. As an associate attorney, Megan represented clients in criminal defense and family law matters, in trial court and on appeal, including 2 cases before the Tennessee Supreme Court. Megan has also done freelance legal writing for federal criminal cases, as well as argued before the Tennessee Court of Appeals. While Megan is now primarily a divorce attorney, she has represented many clients all over Knoxville in all family law matters including child custody, child support and more.
As a mother of two, Megan enjoys her peaceful moments between nap times and homework.
